732,767. Eddy current brake control systems. ELECTRO-MECANIQUE DE L'AVEYRON. Dec. 17, 1953 [Dec. 17, 1952], No. 35226/53. Class 103 (1). A brake system, applicable particularly to cranes, mine hoists and the like comprises an eddy current brake 3 coupled to the shaft 1 of the winch 2 to be braked, the current through the exciting coils 6 of the eddy current brake being varied by a rheostat of which the coils rl to rn are brought into operation by a slider 13 the position of which is varied by a centrifugal or the like governor 10 driven by a shaft 8 coupled to the shaft 1 and acting through a push-rod 12 against an adjustable spring 14. By using resistances rl to rn such that the eddy current brake does not come into effect until a speed N 0 near to a speed N 1 is reached and has a retarding torque equal to the driving torque at a speed N 2 the speed of the shaft is limited to a value between N 1 and N 2 . The exciting current for the eddy current brake is advantageously produced by a dynamo 9 on the shaft 8, the exciting current 22 thereof being put out of action by the opening of contacts 17 by a device 18 keyed to the shaft 8 and responsive to the direction of rotation so that the eddy current brake is made inoperative during a hoisting operation.
