690,035. Automatic control systems for hoists. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Sept. 19, 1950 [Nov. 2, 1949], No. 28089/49. Class 38 (iv). [Also in Group XXXVII] The speed of an induction motor 1 driving a hoist is measured by a tachometer generator 13, the output of which is compared with a reference voltage tapped off potentiometer 17, any difference being amplified by transductors 20, 21 to control the coil 22 and hydraulic servomotor 24 which correctively varies the resistor 8 in the rotor circuit. The reference voltage is varied by a cam 19 according to the position of the hoist cage to suitably accelerate and slow down the cage. If the tachometer output exceeds the reference voltage, rectifier 39 conducts and transductor 38 actuates the dynamic braking relay OCD connecting the stator of the motor to a grid-controlled rectifier 11. The D.C. excitation current is made proportional to (or a non-linear function of), the rotor current by controlling the rectifier according to the rectified and amplified output of current transformers 33. This output is also applied via transductor 37 to the rotor resistor controlling transductor 21 to prevent a predetermined rotor current from being exceeded. The limiting current is determined either by a polarized rectifier limiter on the input to transductor 37 or, Fig. 2 (not shown), the transductor 37 is arranged so that the impedance of the output winding increases abruptly when the current in the control winding falls below a predetermined critical value.
