Abstract

565,372. Winch brakes. HUNT, J. B. Feb. 5, 1944, No. 1936/43. [Class 78 (v)] A centrifugal brake for automatically limiting the speed of a winch, e.g. when lowering boats, comprises a plurality of arms 6 mounted fixedly on, and extending radially from, the winding-drum shaft 4. Pivoted to each arm 6 is .a weighted brake shoe 9 biassed by a spring 11 to keep the shoe away from the interior friction surface 10 of a fixed brake cylinder 3. The spring 11 is connected at one end 12 to the shoe weight, and at the other end to one of the other arms 6 by an adjustable screw 13 and pivoted socket 14. The brake functions only when the winch drum is rotating at above a predetermined speed.
