Abstract

811,669. Displacement measuring. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 10, 1957 [July 18, 1956], No. 22185/56. Class 40 (1). A displacement measuring device, which may be used for example to measure the relative displacement between the base of a machine tool and a slide mounted thereon, comprises a scale having a zig-zag conductor and a cursor having at least one conductor of similar configuration and adapted to be mounted in proximity to the scale so that relative displacement can occur between the scale and the cursor in a predetermined direction, the limbs of the conductors being oblique to this direction. The device is such that electrical signals can be transferred by electromagnetic induction from one conductor to the other with an amplitude ratio responsive to the relative displacement. As shown, the scale comprises a glass plate 2 having a conductor 1 applied thereto by a silver etching process. The cursor 3 carries two relatively short conductors 5, 6, corresponding limbs of the two conductors being displaced relatively to each other by (2n+¢)p where n is an integer and p is the spacing of the limbs of conductor 1. Further conductors la, 5a, 6a may be provided as shown to cancel out any error due to relative sidelash between the scale and the cursor. Alternatively a sidelash detecting device similar to that shown but wherein the limbs of the conductors are parallel to the predetermined direction 4 may be used to drive a servomotor which displaces the cursor 3 to annul the sidelash or removes the effects by means of differentials after the output voltages of the displacement measuring device have been followed up. The conductors of the device illustrated may be printed alongside another measuring device having the conducting limbs normal to the relative movement for indicating fine displacement and several devices of various " gear-down " ratios may be employed, printed on the same plate and cursor. In a modification conductors 1, 5, 6 may be printed on discs or cylinders with successive limbs angularly displaced about the axis to measure angular displacement.
