816,723. Photo-electric measuring apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 8, 1957 [Aug. 11, 1956], No. 25051/57. Class 40 (3). In apparatus for measuring the relative displacement of two members by passing light through two grids 1, 2 carried thereby on to photo-cells 3, 4 which are connected to an elec. tronic comparison apparatus 5 and a counter 6, the grids 1, 2 are made of slightly different pitches so that the signals received by the cells 3, 4 are of opposite phase. The grids may be in contact as shown or may be spaced apart with an optical system between them and with a prism or mirrors to direct the light on to the cells.
