Abstract
861,153. Measuring displacement electrically. T. I. (GROUP SERVICES) Ltd. Dec. 18, 1958 [Dec. 19, 1957], No. 39438/57. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XXXV] Movement is measured by positioning a conducting screen A between conductors, one of which is fed with an A.C. signal so as to vary the signal induced in the other. As shown in Fig. 2, coils P1, P2 are fed from a common oscillator O and coils S1, S2 are connected in opposition so that their combined outputs are zero when the screen is symmetrically positioned as shown and increases as the screen moves away from the central position, the phase sense of the combined output being determined by the direction of movement. The combined output is fed to the grid of V1 (Fig. 3), where it is amplified and phase compared at the grids of V3, V4 with a reference signal from oscillator O which is phase split, amplified at V2 and fed to the suppressor grids of V3, V4. The difference outputs on V3, V4 are measured by valve volt meter V5 which comprises a centre zero meter M. A tapered portion may precede the screen proper to ensure the production of an error signal of correct sign before the screen reaches the region of the coils (Fig. 5, not shown). The device may be used in a load cell for weighing.
