Abstract

Class 100(1) An apparatus for maintaining lateral register of a web comprises a member arranged transversely of the web and connected to a source of vacuum, and means for differentially varying the degree of vacuum along the member, so as to vary the web tension laterally of the web. As shown, the member is a hollow cylindrical tension bar 1 having slots 2 and a central baffle 3 which divides the bar into two compartments connected to two pipes 4 and 5 joined by a control valve 6. A pipe 7 having a valve 8 connects the valve 6 with a suction pump, not shown. Manual actuation of a handle 9 of. the valve 6 varies the vacuum applied to the two compartments of the bar 1 and so controls the tension applied to each edge of the web, thereby causing a transverse movement of the web along the bar. In a modification, the member is a flat bar formed with slots connected by individual short pipes to pipes joined by a control valve. In another modification, the member is a peripherally grooved roller engaging a trough having a central baffle and pipes extending from either end to a control valve. In each embodiment, the control valve may be operated automatically in response to lateral deviations of the web. For example, a pair of bellows may be connected to a lever actuating the control valve, such that the bellows actuatethe control valve when a hole in members at each side of the web is covered as a rsult of lateral deviation of the web.
