Abstract
Polyesters are prepared by either (i) completely esterifying a benzene tri- or higher carboxylic acid or anhydride with a monohydric alcohol or (ii) partially esterifying it so that at least two of the carboxyl groups are esterified, and then interchanging the monohydric alcohol with a polyhydric alcohol and continuously removing the monohydric alcohol and water liberated. In a modification of the process dibasic unsaturated carboxylic acids in an amount of 5-30 per cent by weight of the benzene carboxylic acids are incorporated in the polyester: (a) by mixing the unsaturated acid with the polyhydric alcohol during the interchange, (b) by interchanging with an excess of polyhydric alcohol and then reacting with the unsaturated acid, (c) by forming an ester of the unsaturated acid and excess polyhydric alcohol, and then performing the interchange with that ester or (d) forming an ester of the polyhydric alcohol with excess unsaturated acid and using the acid ester thus formed instead of the unsaturated acid itself. Benzene carboxylic acids specified are pyromellitic,tri mellitic, mellophanic and benzene pentacarboxylic acids. Monohydric alcohols specified are the alkanols of 1-8 carbon atoms. Polyhydric alcohols specified are ethylene, propylene and butylene glycols, hexane diols (1 : 6), glycerol and glycerol monoesters of fatty acids. Unsaturated acids and esters thereof disclosed are maleic acid, ethylene glycol di-maleate and di-b -hydroxyethyl maleate. Solvents for the resins include acetone and 1 : 1 butanol/toluene. The unsaturated resins may be copolymerized with styrene, vinyl acetate or acrylates in the presence of benzoyl, dilauroyl or cyclohexanone peroxide with or without cobalt naphthenate. Many examples are given. Uses.-Stoving lacquers.
