Abstract

Unsaturated polyester resins are made by esterifying a tri- or higher benzene polycarboxylic acid with a monohydric and a polyhydric alcohol, using the monohydric alcohol in such an amount as to effect partial esterification of the benzene polycarboxylic acid to leave an average of approximately two carboxyl groups per molecule of the acid free for esterification by the polyhydric alcohol, and intercondensing the condensation product with an unsaturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acid. Specified benzene polycarboxylic acids are trimellitic, trimesic and pyromellitic acid and specified monohydric alcohols are methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, amyl alcohol, hexanol, octanol, benzyl alcohol, and phenylethanol. In examples (1) A hydroxyl group-containing condensate made by esterifying pyromellitic acid with a mixture of butanol and ethylene glycol was polyesterified with maleic anhydride and the product copolymerised with styrene in the presence of benzoyl peroxide and cobalt naphthenate ; (2) A partial ester made by esterifying pyromellitic acid with benzyl alcohol in the presence of butanol was polyesterified with a mixture of ethylene glycol and maleic anhydride and the product copolymerised with styrene in the presence of benzoyl peroxide.
