Abstract
811,295. Capacitors. PHOTO PRINTED CIRCUITS Ltd. Aug. 23, 1955 [Aug. 24, 1954], No. 24630/54. Class 37. A capacitor comprises two thin copper foil electrodes 11, 12 mounted upon the same side of an insulating sheet 10, the electrode 11 having a plurality of fingers 13 which fit between corresponding fingers 14 of the electrode 12, and the channel between the fingers being filled, partially at least, with a material having a dielectric constant greater than unity. In a preferred embodiment, a thin copper-foil sheet is bonded to an insulating sheet 10 consisting of resinbonded laminated paper and is then coated with an etching resist which is hardened by a photographic process over those portions of the foil which are to form the electrodes, the unhardened portions being subsequently washed away. The exposed portions of the foil are then etched away and the resistant coating subsequently removed. The channel between the electrodes is then filled with a suitable dielectric material; this may comprise a mixture of powdered alumina or a ceramic with an adhesive such as shellac. The dielectric material may fill the gap without extending over the upper surfaces of the electrodes, Fig. 2 (not shown); alternatively as shown in Fig. 3 it may cover the electrodes completely thus also protecting the electrodes from atmospheric corrosion.
