810,910. Electric lamp bulbs. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 11, 1957 [June 13, 1956], No. 18399/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(2) [Also in Group XVI] A method of frosting part of the inside of a hollow hard glass lamp bulb, comprises pouring into the bulb a frosting liquid at a temperature lower than that at which it can etch the glass, and heating from the outside that part of the wall of the bulb which is to be frosted to a temperature to enable the etching to take place. The glass has a co-efficient of linear expansion of from 35 to 55 x 10<SP>-7</SP> measured between 20‹ and 300‹ C. The liquid may be acid fluoride, the temperature at introduction 20‹ C., and the wall be heated to 70‹ or 80‹ C. The bulb may be partly inserted into a bath of hot liquid, or into a radiation furnace containing a plurality of electric thermal radiators, one wall of the furnace having an aperture which when the bulb is inserted corresponds to the boundary of the part to be frosted. The bulb may be provided with small frosted portions in the shape of letters, figures or other designs, by heating the wall with a heated stamp of the design shape, or by applying heat to a part of the wall covered with a mask having the design cut out thereof.
