Abstract

A refractory brick, unfired and suitable for use without kiln firing, comprises a binder and a refractory material made up of a mixture including coarse magnesia particles, coarse chrome ore particles and fine magnesia particles, the mixture being low in particles of intermediate size, more than 90 per cent. of the coarse particles resting on a 28 mesh screen and more than 40 per cent. resting on an 8 mesh screen, the coarse particles making up 65 to 90 per cent. of refractory material, 10 to 50 per cent. of the refractory material being coarse chrome ore particles, and the fine particles being substantially all smaller than 48 mesh, making up 10 to 35 per cent. of refractory material, and being substantially free from chrome ore. The refractory is made preferably by binding the coarse and fine particles with dilute sulphuric acid; a mineral binder such as about 1 per cent. ground kaolin and/or 3 to 15 per cent. iron powder passing 28 mesh can also be included. The mix is pressed into brick form under a pressure of more than 5000 p.s.i. Steel sheets can be introduced into, or on the surface of, the refractory and are co-moulded therewith. Preferably after moulding the bricks are treated with carbon dioxide and dried above 100 DEG C. Specifications 502,555, 546,220, 680,642, 713,811 and 778,047 [Group XII] are referred to.
