Abstract

A process for drying wood pulp containing from 15 to 75 per cent by weight of water comprises fluidizing the pulp in hot air supplied under a fluctuating pressure sufficient to cause the fluidized pulp particles to vibrate. In practice a wood pulp slurry made in known manner is dewatered to the desired water content by means of a slurry press, a screw press or a continuous centrifuge, and the moist pulp is preferably shredded before it passes via a cyclone to a drier where, in the form of a fluidized bed, it is subjected to a pulsating supply of hot air. The dried pulp in discrete form is suitable for use in the manufacture of viscose.
