A method of forming a metal tube with an external helical metal fin comprises continuously applying a strip of metal edgewise to a rotating tube, forming said strip at room temperature into a helical fin with its inner edge in contact with the tube, and arc-welding the helix by said inner edge to the surface of the tube. A steel tube 1 is held vertically and rotated by the chuck of a lathe, a slide 2 of which, displaced axially of the tube by a lead-screw 4, carries means for guiding steel strip 3 to be wound edgewise on the tube 1 and means mounted on a transverse slide 5 for arc welding the strip 3 to the tube 1. The leading end 21 of the strip 3 is secured to the tube by a clamp 22 and bolt 23 and is drawn thereby through straightening roll 16, past cutters 26 which chamfer its upper inner edge, thence between blocks 11, 15 to be guided round the tube 1 by a projection on the block 15 and by a tongue 28 on the block 11. Welding by fusion.-A welding head 30 is angularly adjustable about a part 31 on the slide 5 and is further adjustable, by means of an eccentric 37, about a bolt 38 and also relative to said eccentric. The welding wire passes from a supply reel carried by an arm 43 of the welding means, through the head 30 to a point X at the inner edge of the strip and surface of the tube. The tube may be horizontal.
