Abstract

1330866 Making heat exchangers; coiling L'AIR LIQUIDE SOC ANON POUR L'ETUDE ET L'EXPLOITATION DES PROCEDES GEORGES CLAUDE 12 Nov 1970 [13 Nov 1969] 53990/70 Headings B3A and B3E A method of making a helical-tube heat exchanger comprises mounting a core 1 vertically on a base 24, and winding at least one tube 2 around it by establishing relative rotational and translational motion between the tube and core, whereby the tube forms a helix having an axis coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the core. This eliminates the tendency of the core to bend when mounted horizontally in conventional apparatus. The tube 2 is supplied from a spool 16, which is suspended from a member 14<SP>1</SP>. A rotary device 8, comprising a fixed lower section 19 and an upper section mounted on rollers 18, rotates the spool 16 around the core. As the spool is rotated, hydraulic jacks 12 raise a platform 4, on which the device 8 is mounted, and an operator guides the tube 2 on to the core 1. The location of the tube may be indicated by a template on the core or the tube may be guided into hollows 26 in metal strip uprights (28), Fig. 2 (not shown). Each spool may be provided with more than one tube, and there may be more than one spool. A roller device may be located between the spool and the core to perform one or more of the following operations on the tube; cleaning, straightening, pre-bending, flattening, guiding or tensioning.
