Abstract
464,081. Making wire. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. Oct. 5, 1936, No. 27008. Convention date, Oct. 19, 1935. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Rolling; shearing.-A strip S is made into a number of parallel wires by grooving rolls 18, and slitting rolls 30, after which the wires are smoothed by passing through semicircular die plates 61 which smooth one half of the periphery and then further on they pass through inverted semicircular die plates 64 which smooth the other half periphery. When the slit wires leave the slitting roll 30 alternate wires are guided upwards by rollers 51, 52 to press the wire up against the semicircular smoothing dies 61 and further on other rollers 57, 58 guide these wires down against the smoothing dies 64, while the other set of alternate wires are treated vice versa. The smoothing dies 61 &c. are adjustable up or down by hand screws 70 while the guide rollers 51 &c. are adjusted up or down by moving their carrying plates by motor 49 driving screws 46. The uncut strip is initially pushed into the grooving rolls by clamping jaws pushed up and then retracted by a hydraulic cylinder 28 to friction-tensioning position, and after being led through the apparatus, is wound upon a pulling coiler 73. The wire may be suitable as welding-rods as described in Specification 464,817.
