754,020. Making tubes;coiling helicallyjointed tubes; welding by fusion. KUNZ, E. May 20, 1954 [May 21, 1953], No. 14868/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Apparatus for making a tube 'from a metal strip by winding the strip into helical' form in a guide sleeve and welding the helical joint so formed is provided with supporting means on which the welded tube is moved forward in correct axial position to ensure accurate welding. Metal strip 1 is drawn from a supply roll 2 through straightening rolls 3 by driven rollers 4 which feed it through a guide 7, under a roller 10, adjusted so that its righthand end, Fig. 1, is lower than its left-hand end, over a roller 9 and into a guide sleeve 8 where its edge is guided by an adjustable stop 11 and a curved plate 16. The helical joint is welded at 13, by submerged arc or coated electrode welding, being supported on the inside by a water-cooled copper backing plate 14, Fig. 3, carried by a lever 17 urged towards the joint. The welded tube is supported on rollers 19 and is prevented from moving laterally by an adjustable stop 22. The welded tube may be divided into lengths by a cutter burner or saw. Three rollers may be used for bending.
