Metal strip is helically coiled to form a tube by a reciprocating or oscillating bender. Sheet metal strip 2 is fed, intermittently by roller or endless chain means on a frame 16, to an abutment 7 and is coiled therearound by a bender 4 reciprocated, for example by crank means, to form a tube 12. The strip 2 may come from a coil through straightening means and may be preheated by induction heating or a burner. The angle of feed of the strip 2 may be varied by moving the frame 16, on rollers 17, about a pivot 15 or by angularly moving the coiling means relatively to the feed means. Instead of being perpendicular to the plane of the strip the bender 4 may be movable radially of the tube 12 at an angle to the said plane. The bender 4 may be arranged on the end of a pivotable arm. The strip may be negatively pre-bent by ram means against a ridge on the feed table in front of the abutment 7. The coiled tube is guided by rollers 20 on a frame 23 pivoted at 22 and the helical seam is welded, e.g. by submerged arc welding at 21. The welding device may be carried by the frame 23. In a modification, Fig. 4, a bender 40 inside the formed tube 12 reciprocates to bend the strip 2 in co-operation with adjustable abutments 26, 27. In another modification, Fig. 5, the strip is bent by a curved member 29 pivoted about an adjustable pivot 30 and rocked by toggle means 32, 33.
