Abstract
800,798. Making gilled tubes; angular bending; coiling; welding by pressure. SPIRO GILLS, Ltd. March 21, 1957 [Feb. 1, 1956], No. 3172/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XIII] A gilled tube comprises a tube with a spirally wound gill element thereon with a flange adjacent the tube which is attached to the tube by spot welding. Steel strip 14 is fed through rollers 15, 16, which form it into strip 11 of L- shaped cross-section, on to and by a rotated tube 10. The tube 10 is engaged on its underside by roller electrodes 19, 20 and on its upper side by a roller electrode 21 bearing on the flange of the gill strip 11. The rollers are urged against the tube 10 by a pneumatic cylinder means 36 mounted on a vertically slidable frame 27 carrying the rollers 19, 20, the piston of the cylinder being connected to the upper roller 21, vertically slidable relative to the frame 27. The roller electrode supporting means and the strip forming means is moved axially of the tube 10, e.g. by a feed-screw, as the tube is rotated, although transformers may be carried on a separate fixed unit. The roller electrodes may be watercooled. The roller electrodes 19, 20 are connected to one side of a transformer secondary winding 31 and the roller 21 to the other, a timing device in the circuit produces an interruption of current so that the gill is stitchwelded on to the tube. A roller electrode 42, in the form of one or more rollers, connected to one side of the secondary winding of a heating transformer 32, the other side of which is connected to the rollers 19, 20, heats the strip to facilitate forming and winding.
