Abstract

1,080,874. Making finned tubes; welding by pressure. INTERNATIONAL COMBUSTION (HOLDINGS) Ltd., and PHOENIX STEEL TUBE CO. Ltd. June 22, 1964 [June 28, 1963; July 31, 1963], Nos. 25883/63 and 30452/63. Headings B3A and B3R. A method for the formation of externally finned metal tubing comprises feeding strip 1 into a tube forming machine 3 cutting the tube into desired lengths and at an intermediate stage thereto, securing fin stock in position on the tube. The formed tube 4 passes through a cooling device 5 and a sizing device 6 after being formed and its abutting edges welded by electrodes in the machine 3 and may be fed to a machine 7 to he rolled to an oval cross-section. Wire for the fins is supplied from reels 8 and is welded to the tube by electrodes located slighty in advance of pressure rolls 10. The welds are scarfed by tools (not shown) which are mounted such that they can be withdrawn quickly by means of a mechanism interlocked with a weld power control. Tube movement is maintained by pull-out rolls 12, the tube passing through a cooling device 13, a fin trimming device 14, forming rolls 15 to restore it to a round crosssection, if required, and flying cut-off machinery 16. Welding current of 400-450 kc/s. per second flows from one electrode to the other via the surface of the tube. The area of contact between fin and tube at the rolls 10 and the fin wire to the other electrode raises the temperature sufficiently to enable the rolls 10 to forge the fin wires to the tube.
