Abstract

808,983. Screwing-up nuts, screws &c. DESOUTTER BROS. Ltd. Jan. 16, 1957 (Feb. 2, 1956], No. 3292/56. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIV] A nut-runner or screwdriver, operated by a motor 2 which stalls when the nut &c. has been driven home, comprises a two-speed epicyclic gear between the output shaft 5 of the motor and the nut &c. engaging- device 23, such that the low-speed-drive at hightorque takes over automatically during the last stage of running a nut &c. In the epicyclic gear 15 ... 18, the shaft 5 is formed as the sun-gear 15 driving the planetwheels 16, which are mounted on spindles 17 in a carrier 18 constituting the low-speed driving- element. The high-speed, direct-drive from the spindle 5 is transmitted through a dogclutch 26, 27, 29, loaded by a spring 28, the driving-element 27 being connected to the spindle 5 and the driven element to the nutdriving sleeve 24 by splines 25 permitting the clutch to slip upon an increase in the torque required to drive the nut. The sleeve 24 then slows down to the speed of the carrier, which continues the drive, through clutch-teeth 19, 30 provided respectively on the carrier and a member 20 keyed to the sleeve 24 and arranged to " free-wheel " when the direct-drive is operative. Springs 21 load the clutch 19, 30, and a spindle 22 supporting the nut-engaging- device 23 is keyed to the sleeve 24. The pneumatic vane-motor 2 drives the output-shaft 5, through two sets of epicyclic reduction gears 6, 7, 8, 10, and 11 ... 14.
