Abstract
<PICT:0808153/III/1> Liquid substances are dried by applying them to an endless band, passing the latter with the substance carried thereon first through a heating zone in which drying is effected, and then through a cooling zone in which the dried product is cooled and becomes crisp or friable, and finally scraping the dried and cooled substance from the band. A plurality of separately heated heating chambers may be provided or a single heating chamber may be subdivided into a plurality of separately heated sections. The cooling chamber may be disposed on the same or opposite sides of the band or cooling may be effected by exposing a corresponding part of the conveyer to atmosphere. In a preferred embodiment the heating zone is divided by vertical partitions 191, 192 and 193 into zones 131 132, 133 and 134 and the cooling chamber 15 extends along the greater part of the length of the band 10. The liquid which may be molasses may be sprayed by means of a feed device 18 as described in Specification 760,131, [Group II], and detached by means of scraper 16.
