Class 146(3) [Also in Group XL(b)] Facsimile recording apparatus comprising a ball-point writing device clamped to the armature of an electric relay operated in response to the received signals includes means for operating -the clamp arrangement to release its hold on the writing device held therein and positioning means whereby the armature can be located in a predetermined position when the writing device is being mounted in the apparatus. The recording is effected by a ball-point refill 10 vibrated by the armature 2 of an electro-magnet 1 in combination with a rotating drum 16 carrying a paper sheet. The refill 10 is gripped between a jaw extension 3 of the armature 2 and a jaw portion 5 of a member 4 slidable on the armature and urged to the left by a compression spring 9 engaging a collar 6 secured to the slide 4 and a washer 8 abutting a pin 7 on the armature 2. A lever 11 pivoted at 12 and connected by links 17, 18 to the pivoted lid 15 of the casing 14 is rocked to the right when the lid 15 is raised and by engagement with the collar 6 moves the slide 4 so that the refill 10 can be withdrawn from the jaw portions 3, 5. The raising of the lid 15 also rotates an armature-positioning member 21 so that the armature 2 is held in the shaped notch 23, the mechanism being arranged so that on raising the lid the armature 2 is positioned before the jaw portions are opened, and on lowering the lid, the refill 10 is gripped with its point in contact with the drum surface before the armature is released from the positioning member 21. The armature may be operated piezoelectrically and the jaw 5 may be carried by a member pivoted to the armature. Also the positioning member may be arranged to move along a fixed slide in response to the opening and closing movements of the lid 15.
