Abstract

807,251. Creasing. SQUIRE, H. F. May 30, 1957 [Nov. 12, 1956], No. 34571/56. Class 100(2) In a method of producing a creasing matrix on the platen of a cutting and creasing platen press, lengths of channelled strip material are temporarily attached to the creasing rules and caused to adhere to the platen in register with the creasing rules when the press is closed. In Fig. 2 a matrix strip 6 of a flexible material e.g. cellulose acetate or polyvinyl cholride, has a channel 8 in which a location strip 5 of sponge rubber or foamed polystyrene is inserted and gripped. The location strip 5 has a channel 7 of such a width that when it is pushed over one of the creasing rules the strip is temporarily secured thereto. The composite strip 5, 6 is atached to the creasing rule in this way when the press is open and adhesive is applied to the back of the strip 6. The press is then closed until the adhesive is set; when the press is opened again the strip 6 sticks to the surface of the platen in register with the creasing rule. The location strip 5 is then removed from either the strip 6 or the creasing rule. The channel 8 may be engaged by a longitudinal rib on the underside of the location strip 5 if the latter is wider than the channel 8, or the whole of the strip 6 may be carried in a longitudinal groove on the underside of the strip 5. In Fig. 4 the location strip 5 consists of two pieces of foam rubber 10, 11 secured to a linen strip 12, a channel corresponding to the channel 7 being left between them. The channelled matrix strip 6 is fastened to the line strip 12 by a tacky adhesive. A tacky adhesive is also applied to the underside of the strip 6 and is covered by a protective paper strip 13. The composite strip 5, 6 is attached to the creasing rule and the protective strip 13 removed before closing the press. When the press is opened the strip 6 sticks to the platen and the location strip 5 may be carefully removed therefrom. In modifications bosses, longitudinal ribs or other projections on the underside of the strip 5, mating with holes, longitudinal grooves or other recesses on the surface of the strip 6 may replace the tacky adhesive as a means for fastening the two strips together. The linen strip 12 may be omitted, the parts 10, 11 being stuck directly on to to the strip 6. Projections may be formed inside the groove 7 to co-operate with recesses on the creasing blade or vice versa.
