Abstract
807,250. Abrasive wheels. WINTER, W. Aug. 30, 1956 [Jan. 26, 1956], No. 26501/56 Class 60. A grinding or lapping wheel comprises a ring-shaped body 1, Fig. 1, carrying an abrasive coating la, a central hub part 4, a spring diaphragm disc 5 connecting the ring-shaped body with the hub, and a disc 3 clamping the diaphragm to the hub part. The diaphragm has a peripheral ring 2 which is secured by screws 2a to the member 1, and the clamping disc 3 is provided on its opposite faces with ribs 3a and 3b; the tendency of the diaphragm to take up an oblique position under the action of a grinding pressure P applied as shown will be hindered by its engagement with the cooperating rib 3b at the opposite side of the wheel to that which receives the pressure. The ribs 3a, 3b are at different radii so that by reversing the ring a different hindering effect can be produced. If the hub part 4 and clamping disc 3 are interchanged, the spring action of the diaphragm is eliminated and the wheel will be rigid. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the diaphragm 5 is clamped to the hub part 4 by a nut 9 which can be adjusted to vary the elasticity of the diaphragm and balls 8 are located in opposed notches 6<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>1</SP> provided in the ring- shaped body and the hub part 7. The grinding pressure Pi applied to the periphery of the wheel causes flexure of the diaphragm in the region of the gap R. In the further embodiment shown in Fig. 5, the abrasive coatings la, 6a are provided on both the sides and the periphery of the ring-shaped body which is mounted in similar manner to that shown in Fig, 4 ; the hub 7a is secured by a nut 10 on the spindle 11.
