Abstract

942,654. Securing wheel cover discs. J. H. HIPWELL, and K. J. HIPWELL. Dec. 14, 1959 [Dec. 12, 1958], No. 40104/58. Heading B7C. A wheel cover disc 9 is secured to a wheel 2 by means of two bell-shaped metal shells 7, 8 telescoped within each other so that their mouths clamp therebetween the rim of the wheel centre hole and their crowns extend outboardly of the wheel, the disc being clamped to the shells by a clamping bolt 21 extending through holes 20, 18 respectively in the centres of the disc 9 and the crown of the outer shell 8 to screw into a tapped hole 15 in the crown of the inner shell 7. As shown, the inner shell 7 has a flared lip 12 to engage the inboard face of the wheel, and longitudinal slots 13 extending from the lip to provide a resilient grip of the shell within the wheel centre. A reinforcing disc 14, secured to the crown of the inner shell, is provided with the central tapped hole 15 and diametrally opposed tapped holes 16, the latter having headed screws 17 screwed therein so that their heads may be engaged in keyhole slots 19 in the crown of the outer shell when the two shells are assembled together. The clamping bolt 21 is carried by a sheet metal peripherally eared knob 23 housing a cupped rubber 26 to engage the cover disc.
