Class 100(2) In apparatus for holding backing sheets, flexible litho printing plates, duplicating stencils or like flexible sheets 10 on the cylinders of rotary duplicating and like printing machines, a narrow slot 2 is provided in the wall of the cylinder 1 through which the ends of the backing sheet or like can be passed so that abutments thereon can be engaged by abutments on two closely spaced bars 3, 4 rotatable in opposite directions in bearings in the cylinder ends so as to trap the juxtaposed ends of the sheet and its abutments between them. The bars are coupled by gears 7, 8 and preferably formed with grooves 5, 6 adapted to close upon a rod 13 passed through pockets 11, 12 formed in the opposite ends of the sheet or plate 10. Alternatively, the bars may have rectangular abutments for engaging the rod 13. The abutments on the sheet may comprise projectior.s or press-buttons formed on the sheet or plate itself. The rod 13 may be of flexible material and may co-operate with a single pocket formed in one edge of the sheet or plate or be fixed to one edge, the other edge being provided with a U-shaped fold for embracing the rod and pocket prior to engagement with the bars 3, 4, or as a further alternative, the rod may rest in a U-shaped fold on one edge of the sheet or plate which is embraced by a second U- shaped fold formed in the other edge. Rotation of the bars 3, 4 is effected by a cam 14, on a rotatable shaft 15, which engages a crankpin 16 on a crank 17 fast on the bar 4, the arrangement being adapted to hold the parts locked by friction, but other means may be employed for this purpose.
