Abstract

806,941. Hand irons. SUNBEAM CORPORATION. March 16, 1955, No. 7676/55. Class 138 (2). A sole plate for a hand iron comprises a main cast body portion 14 of a metal of high thermal conductivity, and a thin covering including a sheet 27 of hard substantially scratchproof metal secured to one face of the body portion, the covering being provided with a plurality of projecting members 31 embedded in the body portion in interlocking engagement therewith. In the example the body portion 14 is of aluminium and has an embedded heating element 15 comprising an outer steel sheath 17. The sheet 27 is of stainless steel and has a thin sheet 30, e.g. of cold rolled carbon steel bonded to it by copper brazing in an atmospherically controlled furnace. The sole plate is manufactured in a mould comprising upper and lower sections 11 and 12 and gated at 41. A peripheral extension 27b of the sheet 27 prevents molten metal from entering the cavity beneath this sheet and is subsequently cut away. Specification 806,942, [Group XXII], is referred to.
