Abstract

806,703. Surgical syringes. COOK-WAITE LABORATORIES Inc. July 6, 1955 [July 12, 1954; Jan. 4, 1955], No. 19515/55. Class 81 (2). A hypodermic syringe comprises a barrel for the reception of an ampoule having a plunger with a grippable tip, means for piercing the ampoule and leading the contents to a needle at one end of the barrel, a retractable piston-rod slidable in a head at the other end of the barrel and projectable into the barrel, gripping means at the interior end of the piston-rod and means movable relative to the piston-rod to move the gripping means radially inwardly to grip the tip of the ampoule plunger so that the plunger can be moved for injection or aspiration. The syringe barrel 10 is provided with a head 26 which is pivoted relative to the barrel 10 for the insertion of an ampoule 16. The ampoule 16 is provided with a front stopper (not shown) which is pierced by a needle which communicates with a hypodermic needle. The rear stopper 22 of the ampoule is made of rubber-like material and is provided with an integral projection 30 which is gripped by fingers 34 secured to the piston-rod 20. A locking sleeve 24 which threadedly engages the head 26 is provided to secure the head 26 relative to the barrel 10 and to hold the ampoule 16 in place. An operating sleeve 38 is disposed concentrically between the locking sleeve 24 and the piston-rod 20. The locking sleeve 24 and the operating sleeve 38 may be keyed together (Figs. 5, 10, and 14, not shown) so that they are either only axially slidable or only rotationally slidable relative to one another but so that when the locking sleeve 24 is rotated to lock the head 26 and the ampoule 16 in place, the operating sleeve is carried forwards to tighten the fingers 34 about the ampoule stopper projection 30. In another construction (Fig. 8), the ampoule 74 is introduced sideways into the syringe barrel 56 which is provided with a fixed head 66. A locking sleeve 70 for securing the ampoule 74 is adjustable independently of the operating sleeve 78 which is threaded on the piston-rod 52. On rotation of the piston-rod 52 relative to the operating sleeve 78, a collet 82 on the operating sleeve 78 presses the fingers 80 towards one another to grip the projection 84 of the ampoule stopper 86.
