Abstract
806,267. Soot-blowers. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. March 27, 1957 [March 27, 1956], No. 9512/56. Class 99(2). In a fluid heater cleaner of the type adapted for the discharge of cleaning fluid from an operative position inside a furnace and adjacent a wall thereof, a tubular nozzle element is formed with at least one port 12 for the discharge of cleaning fluid and has mounted thereon a radiant heat screen in the form of a sheath 15 of high-temperature resisting material. The sheath is provided with apertures 17 coincident with the ports 12. As shown, in Fig. 1, the nozzle tube 10 is of the kind which is axially advanced and retracted to and from an operative position and the nozzle 6 which is connected to the tube by a screw-thread has an enlarged portion 6C over which is fitted and welded thereto at 16 a thin, cylindrical, metal sheath 15 of high temperature-resisting alloy. An air-tight seal about the nozzle tube is formed by a ring 18 secured to the wall box 7 in the furnace wall 1 and a floating ring 19 slidable on the tube, the rings being held in contact by spring means. In a modification, the sheath 15X, Fig. 2, is of a fused, alumina ceramic material and secured to the nozzle by studs 20, the holes 21 in the sheath being of a size to freely permit differential thermal expansion between the nozzle and sheath ; the space between these two parts is filled with silica wool 22.
