Abstract

806,229. Liquid-blast switches. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. March 18, 1957 [March 27, 1956], No. 8783/57. Class 38 (5). A liquid-blast switch has an arc-extinguishing unit 3 immersed in an arc-extinguishing liquid, a lower closure plate 49 for the unit, an inverted cup-shaped cylinder 46 extending upwardly within the unit from the plate, and a pumping piston 55 operable within the cylinder for assisting in arc extinction. In the arrangement shown, passages 47 and openings 53 are provided in the wall of the cylinder so that the space 50 above the piston is in communication with the outside of the unit and the space 56 below the piston communicates with the interior of the unit. When a conducting cross-bar 7 is lowered, a spring 45 causes a downward movement of a moving contact 43 to separate the contacts 35, 43. As this occurs a spring seat 58 moves down under the bias of springs 59, 60 until it engages the lower end of the piston 55. The piston is then moved down to pump liquid into the interior of the extinguishing unit immediately or when the pressure generated by the arc subsides. When a contact disc 44 carried by the contact rod 43 engages an abutment 64, the opening movement of the contact 43 ceases and a contact 61 on the cross-bar 7 separates from the contact disc 44. Normally-open spring-loaded disc valves 22 permit the circulation of liquid by convection through the unit 6 until the valves 22 are closed by the pressure generated within the unit 6. The fixed contact assembly may comprise a flanged stud 42 and spring-biased contactfingers 35 with arc resisting tips 39a, the fingers being formed by slotting a tubular contact member after an annular arc resisting member has been brazed in position. The arc-extinguishing device 57 may be provided with leafspring valve members (not shown). Specification 768,911 is referred to.
