Abstract

805,415. Filters. FRAM CORPORATION. May 6, 1957, No. 14341/57. Class 46. Hydrocarbon liquid, containing a small proportion of water, introduced at 17, Fig. 2, discharges over the top of a riser 19 into an upper (high pressure) chamber and passes through a number of coalescer cartridges 26, each consisting of perforated cylinders 29, 37, Fig. 4, enclosing between them a fibre glass tube 27 having longitudinal grooves 28. The water in the mixture is coalesced by the tubes 27 and the mixture passes down into sacks 39, each having a wired hem cemented to and pressed (by the end of cylinder 37) against the bottom of a threaded sleeve 35 formed on the lower end plate 32 and screwed into a hole 35a in a partition 23. Hydrocarbon liquid passes through the sacks into the lower chamber (at lower pressure) while water collects therein until its weight reaches a critical value, whereupon it passes through the interstices of the fabric intd the water pool W maintained automatically at the level shown. The hydrocarbon liquid is discharged from the upper end of a riser 20 within a domed part 24 of the partition 23 so that separation is assisted by gravity. Specification 777,320 is referred to.
