320,239. Liquid Measurements, Ltd., and Hammond, F. Oct. 15, 1928. Purifying liquids; separating by gravity; filters having sheet filtering-materials.-Apparatus for separating impurities from petrol or other liquid stored in underground or other tanks comprises a pump or the like having its suction inlet connected to a pipe to be inserted into the storage tank, a vessel, which constitutes a trap for impurities in the liquid withdrawn from the tank, a return pipe to be connected to the tank, and means to seal the suction and return pipes into the tank to form a closed system. Lower layers of liquid in the tank 35 are drawn through a pipe 22 by a pump 1 and forced into a vessel 6 through a central pipe 17. Impurities settle in the vessel 6 and the liquid passes out through a pipe 18 and is returned to the tank 35 through a pipe 11 and a pipe 30 which surrounds the pipe 22. The lower portion 21 of the pipe 22 is telescopic and its end is provided with a slotted head 34. The vessel 6 is formed by a base 5, a cylindrical vessel 15 of glass or other transparent material, and a cover 13, these parts being held together by a central bolt 16. A gauze or other filter 19, carried by a plug 20, surrounds the pipe 18. The pipe 30 has at its lower end an internally threaded boss 32 which engages the tank-filler cap screw 33.
