Abstract
An aqueous fission product solution containing ammonium nitrate is treated with a carboxylic acid anhydride to react with and destroy the ammonium nitrate, and the solution is then concentrated by evaporation. Acetic, propionic, and butyric anhydrides are suitable. The aluminium sheath of irradiated uranium rod is removed with caustic solution and the rod dissolved in nitric acid; the solution is saturated with ammonium nitrate and extracted with an organic solvent to remove plutonium. The aqueous phase may then be neutralized and the uranium extracted with diethyl ether or methyl isobutyl ketone. The residual ammonium nitrate solution is added slowly to excess acetic anhydride and the mixture refluxed, ammonium nitrate reacting to form acetic acid and nitrous oxide. The reaction mixture may be distilled to dryness, and any acetamide in the residue destroyed by adding nitric acid; the ammonium nitrate formed is removed by another treatment as specified above. Alternatively the amide may be destroyed by treatment with nitrogen dioxide.
