Abstract

An absorbent material for volatile liquid fumigants is prepared by treating comminuted wood by extracting oils and resins therefrom by means of a suitable solvent, e.g. benzine, and then boiling the wood in slightly acidified water. A soft wood such as balsa wood is preferred. The acidification of the water may be effected with sulphuric, oxalic or acetic acid, and the acidified water removed, after the treatment, by means of a centrifuge, and the wood dried. By this means a product is obtained which is light and bulky and has a slightly acid reaction due to the presence therein of a residue of about 0.5 per cent of acid. Specification 407,792, [Group VI], is referred to.ALSO:Hydrocyanic acid or other volatile liquid fumigant is absorbed in a light, bulky, slightly acid product obtained by treating comminuted wood by extracting oils and resins therefrom by means of a suitable solvent, e.g., benzine, and then boiling the wood in slightly acidified water. Specification 407,792 is referred to.
