Abstract
804,916. Treating gases with discharges. BERGHAUS, B. May 25,1955 [May 31, 1954], No. 15116/55. Class 39(1). An apparatus for carrying out chemical reactions on gaseous, vaporous or finely divided substances by the action of a glow discharge consists of a reaction vessel 1 with a gas outlet 4 connected to a pump and with a nozzle 3 for introducing the gas in the form of a jet with a speed of at least 1/10 of the speed of sound. A non-homogeneous pressure distribution is established with a zone of increased pressure 8 next to the nozzle. A pressure in the range of 0À01-1000 mm. Hg., preferably 0À5-40 mm. Hg., is maintained within the vessel and the total pressure drop is at least 2 : 1. The glow discharge is produced between the nozzle and an electrode 6 and the reaction products may be removed through the outlet 4 or through a pipe 9 which has a perforated annular tube at its end. Gaseous reaction products may be recycled. The nozzle 3 may have a cylindrical or conical bore and may have a cylindrical extension 10, Fig. 2, or may be in the form of a nose 11, Fig. 3. A baffle 12, Fig. 3, may be provided for deflecting the gas jet. The baffle may be cooled by flow of cooling medium 27 to collect reaction products and may be coated with catalytic materials. The baffle may be an electrode. Deposits may be removed from the baffle or other wall surfaces by rotating the surfaces or by moving the surfaces past stationary scraper devices. In Fig. 4 the nozzle 3 introduces the gas at right angles to the discharge set up between electrodes 13 and 14. Electrode 14 may also provide the gas outlet. Nozzle 3 may be insulated or connected to the walls of the vessel or connected to the middle conductor of a two-phase supply. Reaction components may be introduced through a member 26. In Fig 5 the discharge electrodes are a ring 20 and a wall of the vessel 18. The rest of the vessel 17 is of insulating material. The nozzle 2 may be of insulating material or may be of metal and connected in parallel with the wall 18. In further embodiments two or three separate nozzles may be provided for introducing the gas. Three nozzles or alternatively with a single nozzle, three counter electrodes may be connected to the three phases of a three phase supply. The discharge may be D.C. or pulsating.
