Abstract
804,718. Continuous - casting - machines. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. Sept. 3, 1956 [Sept. 22, 1955], No. 26898/56. Class 83 (1). In a continuous-casting process, the molten metal is poured from a source at a substantially uniform rate co-ordinated with a substantially uniform casting-withdrawal rate, but the molten-metal delivery-rate to the upper end of the mould is cyclically changed so that the level of molten metal in the mould varies in a selected pattern. The apparatus comprises a tilting-furnace 10 which discharges into a tundish 12, which in turn delivers into a second tundish 15 arranged for intermittent discharge into the mould 16. The mould and tundish 15 are constructed, and adjustably-mounted, as disclosed in Specification 800,321, one end of the tundish being raised and lowered by a cam-shaft 61 rotated in alternately-reversing directions by a motor controlled by a contact-arm 65 clamped to the shaft 62. An after-cooling-zone 20 is enclosed by a housing 82, coolant from the sump 87 being withdrawn through filters 92, and returned through a pipe 93 to spraynozzles 95. A control-mechanism 100 receives indication of the molten metal levels in the mould, compares them with a desired set of conditions, and regulates the tilting-rate of the furnace accordingly. A manual-control in the mechanism 100, electrically-connected to the withdrawal-rolls 17, enables the withdrawalrate to be regulated in accordance with the requirements of the particular metal being cast. In a modification, Fig. 5, a tundish 105, delivering to two moulds, is mounted on a centrallydisposed shaft 114 and rocked by a driveneccentric. In a further modification, the tundish has a discharge-nozzle which is controlled by a stopper attached to a lever which is oscillated by an eccentric.
