Class 82(1) A crucible or boat, for example to contain material to be zone-refined, such as silicon, germanium or indium antimonide, consists of a refractory container formed from silica-fibre felt and/or silica cloth which may have a thin inner surface of solid silica and a rigid outer refractory support. As shown, a silica boat 1, of normal pattern, acts as a support for the container 2 of silica felt Which may be made by compressing silica wool between two suitably shaped silica or graphite dies and heating to 1450-1700‹C. using an inert atmosphere if graphite dies are employed. When single crystals are to be grown by drawing from a melt, the melt may be contained in a crucible, of for example silica or graphite, lined with silica felt.
