Abstract
A fireproof protective coating for wood or other combustible material, and comprising magnesite, magnesium oxide, magnesium chloride, a mixture of magnesium oxide and magnesium chloride, a silicate, or Portland cement, incorporates as a pigment or pigments able to withstand high temperature, and exhibiting high reflection of infra-red rays of wavelengths between 0,8 and 10 microns, one or more of the sulphides, selenides, or tellurides of non-radioactive elements of the second group in the Periodic table preferably of zinc, cadmium or mercury. The pigment or pigments may be activated by introducing into the crystal lattices thereof, atoms of copper and/or silver and/or gold and/or nickel and/or cobalt and/or a rare earth metal. In addition the coating may contain as additional pigment or pigments one or more of the sulphides, selenides, or tellurides of thallium, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, or lead. The pigment or pigments may be provided with an inorganic protective covering, e.g. of sodium or potassium silicate, or beryllium oxide, or may be treated with temperature-resistant silicones. The fireproof coating may also comprise organic colouring substances which may be embedded in synthetic resins, e.g. polyvinyl esters, polystyrenes, coamorone-indene compounds, and the condensation products of aldehydes, phenols, and cresols, and of polyalcohols and polybasic acids, silicones and other substances. The pigments are preferably used in association with a wetting agent. In examples coatings are prepared comprising (1) magnesium oxide, magnesium or potassium chloride, zinc and cadmium sulphides, and ultramarine green (2) calcium oxide, silica, alumina, ferric oxide, cadmium sulphide, cadmium selenide, magnesium or potassium chloride, and ultramarine blue (3) magnesium oxide, magnesium chloride, calcium sulphide, strontium selenide, europium and samarium oxalates, potassium silicate, potassium chloride, zinc sulphide, and cadmium sulphide, (4) magnesium oxide, magnesium chloride, zinc sulphide, cadmium sulphide, copper, cobalt, and heat-treated lead sulphide. The coatings are made ready for application by mixing with water.
