Abstract

A non-luminescent composition of matter having a chosen infra-red reflectivity in the range 7000 to 100,000 comprises an organic or inorganic pigment and two or more crystalline compounds of an element selected from calcium, strontium, zinc, cadmium, antimony, thallium and lead, with an element selected from sulphur, selenium and tellurium, said crystalline compounds having incorporated in the crystal lattice at least one metal selected from copper, silver, gold, nickel, cobalt and rare earth metals. The crystalline compounds may be in the form of mixed crystals and to obtain absorption within the specified infra-red range all the particles present may have a diameter less than the wavelength, typically a multiple of a quarter wavelength, of the radiation to be absorbed. Numerous examples are given. The compositions may contain both organic dyes and inorganic pigments and may be used in camouflage and protective paints. Examples of inorganic pigments are ultramarine blue or green, zinc chromate, green ferrocyanide of iron, barium sulphate, titanium dioxide, lithopone, magnesium oxide, barium carbonate, zinc silicate, zinc oxide, channel black and green hydrated chromium oxide and examples of organic dyes are naphthol blue, naphthol yellow, helic zinc green, indanthrene blue and indanthrene yellow. Ammonium chloride may be added or a crystallizing agent. The pigments may be incorporated into the compositions by mixing with water, alcohol, or as in oil paints and to prevent sedimentation organic and inorganic colloids such as gelatin, glue, starch, tannin, sodium or potassium silicate, beryllium oxide, or zinc oxide may be added to the mixture which is finally heated in air or a protective atmosphere at temperatures of 700 DEG to 800 DEG C.
