Abstract

A composition consisting essentially of an ethylene polymer having a density of at least 0.94 is formed into filaments at a melting temperature above 125 DEG C. and the filamentary products are stretched 5-10 times their original length per unit weight, without rupture, at a temperature between 55 DEG C. and 5 DEG C. below the melting point of the polymer; the stretched products are then cooled. The polymers used, which are referred to as "ultrathenes," are produced by bringing ethylene gas into contact with such catalysts as chromium oxide or silicated alumina, hexavalent molybdenum compounds, charcoal-supported nickel-cobalt, certain metal alkyls (especially those of Al, Be, Ga, In, Zn, Mg, Na, Li and K) and mixtures of such alkyls with titanium tetrachloride. The composition may contain minor amounts of colouring agents, antioxidants and other stabilizers. Specification 472,051 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 784,920.
