Abstract

A process for the heat-treatment of an ethylene polymer in an oxygen-free environment at a temperature at least 85 DEG C. above its melting point, whereby the polymer is rendered more easily extrudable, comprises forming a blend of the ethylene polymer with 0.1 to 10% of a polymer of at least one of the olefins isobutylene, styrene and o, m and p-methyl styrene, and subjecting the blend to heat treatment. The ethylene polymer may be a homopolymer or a copolymer of ethylene with another olefin such as propylene or butene. In the examples the treatment is effected in an extruder with a heated extension tube. A nitrogen atmosphere is maintained in the hopper and the extruder is filled with molten polymer. The M.P. of the ethylene polymer used is 135 DEG C. and the heat treatment is at about 360 DEG C. Some depolymerization of the modifying polymer may occur.
