A process for continuously producing moulded articles of chemically cross-linked polyethylene comprises continuously extruding polyethylene containing 0.2 to 0.4% by weight of a chemical cross-linking agent at a temperature between the melting point of the polyethylene and the gel point of the mixture, continuously feeding the extrudate through a heated curing zone maintained at temperatures sufficient to heat the extrudate above the activation temperature of the cross-linking agent at a rate which provides a residence time sufficient to activate at least 85% by weight of the cross-linking agent, feeding the cured extrudate to an open mould, closing the mould about a section of the cured extrudate, conforming the latter to the shape of the mould, cooling the mould containing the moulded article and then opening the mould and removing the article. The cross-linking agent is preferably 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di (t-butylperoxy) hexane. Several other suitable agents are specified. The curing zone may be flushed with carbon dioxide to exclude oxygen therefrom. Examples are described of the application of the process to the blow moulding of bottles; and the process may also be applied to the vacuum forming of articles such as flower pots, cafeteria trays, dishes and cups.
