Abstract

Natural or synthetic high molecular weight linear hydrocarbon polymers containing no acetylene groups, e.g. derived from olefines such as isobutylene, styrol, and indene, diolefines such as isoprene, or butadiene, or hydrogenated rubber, gutta or balata, are stabilized towards heating by incorporating therewith 0,1-5 per cent of an aromatic compound having attached to the ring an -XH group, which may be alkylated or esterified by an organic acid and in which X represents an atom of oxygen, sulphur, selenium or tellurium. The added substance may contain additional atoms of these elements which may also be present in either form or as disulphide. Typical additions are indicated. Examples are given of typical compounds and of the stabilization of polyisobutylene, obtained by the action of boron fluoride upon highly purified liquid isobutylene at a temperature of -100 DEG C., with tertiary amyl phenol, tertiary amyl phenol sulphide and disulphide and b -thionaphthol.ALSO:Natural or synthetic high molecular weight linear hydrocarbon polymers containing no acetylene groups, e.g. derived from olefines such as isobutylene, styrol, and indene, diolefines such as isoprene, or butadiene, or hydrogenated rubber, gutta or balata, are stabilized towards heating by incorporating therewith 0,1-5 per cent of an aromatic compound having attached to the ring a -XH, group, which may be alkylated or esterified by an organic acid and in which X represents an atom of oxygen, sulphur, selenium or tellurium.
