Abstract

Fast dyeings are produced on animal or synthetic fibres or on mixtures thereof by applying, from a neutral or acid bath, a highly dispersed aqueous suspension of an azo dyestuff which is insoluble or sparingly soluble in a neutral or acid medium and contains in o : o1-position to the azo bridge a grouping capable of being metallized, and converting the azo dyestuff into a complex metal compound by treatment, during or after the dyeing operation, with an agent yielding metal, e.g. a compound of chromium, cobalt or nickel. Examples 1-19 describe the preparation of fine aqueous suspensions of numerous azo dyestuffs which are employed for dyeing wool from a weakly acid bath in the presence of chromium salts or by the metachrome or single-bath chroming process. The suspensions are made by grinding the dyestuff in the form of a paste with one or more of the following dispersing agents followed by diluting with water: the condensation product from cresol, formaldehyde, 2-hydroxynaphthalene-6-sulphonic acid and sodium sulphite; the condensation product of ethylene oxide with oleyl alcohol or octadecane-diol or an alkyl phenol; polyglycol; benzyl naphthalene sulphonic acid; and the sodium salt of dibutyl naphthalene sulphonic acid. The ground paste may be frozen and the water sublimed to yield a fine powder. Other examples describe the dyeing of wool, silk, polyamide and polyacrylonitrile - chlormethyl - vinyl - ether fibres employing as the agent yielding metal in the dyebath nickel sulphate, cobalt sulphate, sodium chromate, sodium or potassium pyrochromate and sodium or potassium chromosalicylate. In one case, wool is after chromed with sodium or potassium chromosalicylate. Specifications 601,347, 671,243 and 690,600 are referred to.
