Abstract

Dyes are made by combining any diazo-compound with a 1-amino-7-hydroxynaphthalene of the formula <FORM:0493464/IV/1> wherein the naphthalene nucleus may contain a further sulphonic group. The products dye leather in the grain violet, grey, or black tints and also wool. In examples, 1-sulphethylamino-7-hydroxynaphthalene is coupled with diazo compounds from the following amines: (1) aniline; (2) 1-amino-2-methoxybenzene; (3) 1 - amino - 4 - methoxybenzene - 2 - sulphonic acid; (4) 1-aminobenzene-4-sulphonic acid; (5) p-aminobenzylsulphonic acid; (6) 4-amino-2-sulphophenylmethyltaurin; (7) 1-aminobenzene-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester; (8) p-aminosulphacetanilide; also in examples, the disodium salt of 1-sulphomethylamino-7-hydroxynaphthalene-3-sulphonic acid is coupled with diazo compounds derived from (9) 1-amino-2-nitrobenzene-4-sulphonic acid; (10) 4-chloro-2 - nitro - 1 - aminobenzene; (11) 2 - chloro - 4-nitro-1-aminobenzene; (12) sodium 4-amino-azobenzene-41-sulphonate; also (13) 1-amino-4-methoxybenzene is diazotized and coupled with 1 - sulphethylamino - 7 - hydroxynaphthalene - 4-sulphonic acid, details of the dyeing of leather with the product being given. 1-Sulphethylamino-7-hydroxynaphthalene or its 4-sulphonic acid are made by reacting 1-amino-7-hydroxynaphthalene or its 4-sulphonic acid with sodium chlorethane-sulphonate in presence of an acid-binding agent. 1 - Sulphomethylamino - 7 - hydroxynaphthalene-3-sulphonic acid is obtained by the action of formaldehyde bisulphite on a solution of the sodium salt of 1-amino-7-hydroxynaphthalene-3-sulphonic acid.
