An intermittently-operating combustion apparatus burning gaseous fuel comprises the combination of a combustion chamber a, a mixing chamber b provided with gaseous fuel and air inlet control valves e and d respectively and a flame trap c separating the two chambers, inflow of the fuel and air being responsive to intermittent pressure pulses in the combustion chamber Gaseous fuel is supplied through duct h and restricted orifice g to the cushioning chamber f, the fuel then flowing through the valve e into the mixing chamber, the fuel being caused to flow out radially through an annular opening formed between the parts j and i, the fuel then mixing with air entering through the inlet valve d. Gases discharge from the combustion chamber through outlets k. The flame trap is constructed from a spirally coiled metal strip, the convolutions of which are separated by corrugations on the strip.
