Abstract

A sintered hard metal composition consists of 40 to 95 per cent by volume (approximately 54 to 97.7 per cent by weight) of WC crystals, at least 50 per cent by weight of which have a size more than 20 microns, bonded into an integral mass with 60 to 5 per cent by volume (approximately 46 to 2.3 per cent by weight) of a binder selected from Co, Ni, Fe or a mixture thereof. As a grain growth inhibitor 0.005 to 0.5 per cent by weight of Cr or its carbide, or 0.10 to 2 per cent by weight of W may be added. The size of WC crystals may be up to 250 microns and the mean size (as defined) is preferably 150 microns. Sintering temperatures of 1300 DEG to 1475 DEG C. are suitable depending on the binder metal content. Specification 802,802 is referred to.
