Abstract

802,781. Grinding cams. HORSTMANN, S. A., and HORSTMAN, Ltd. July 11, 1955 [June 15, 1954], No. 17526/54. Class 60. A cam 17 being ground by a grinding wheel 18 is carried by a shaft 15 driven through a universal joint 16, the shaft being carried by levers 20 on a shaft 12 carried in bearings 11 ; the levers 20 have bosses 29 which receive a stabilizing or stiffening bar 24a. The shaft 12 has an arm 14 locked by a spring 13, weight or hydraulic means. The shaft 15 also carries a master cam 19 co-operating with a roller 21 carried by bracket 11. The shaft 15 also carries a cam 23 which is the negative of the master cam 19 and co-operates with a roller 24 carried by a pivoted arm 25 loaded by a spring 28 or other means. Any rotation imparted to the shaft 15 by the action of the roller 21 on the master cam 19 is counteracted by the action of the roller 24 on the negative cam 23. In the case of a multiple cam forming machine, the master cams and negative cams may be axially movable to bring them into contact with the rollers 21, 24. When multi-cam cam shafts are being ground, indexing means are provided so that the cams can be produced from a single master cam.
