Abstract
802,367. Washing gases. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 16, 1955 [Dec. 20, 1954], No. 36716/54. Class 55 (2). In removing solid or liquid particles from a gas the latter is passed together with a washing liquid through a venturi tube having an extended throat of uniform cross-sectional area, and of length at least equal to four times its effective diameter and not less than about 2 feet, and then through an apparatus such as a cyclone separator to remove the particles of the washing liquid together with the associated solid or liquid particles originally carried by the gas. The effective diameter is defined as the diameter of a circle of the same area as the cross-section of the throat. The extended throat may be between 2 and 6 feet in length. The washing liquid, which may be water or hydrocarbon, is introduced as an atomized spray or through a plurality of jets at any point in the convergent portion or throat of the venturi, such as at the inlet end of the latter. The ratio of washing liquid to gas may be between 0.4 and 1.0 cubic meters per 1000 cubic meters, the gas velocity being between 150-200 feet per second. The apparatus is particularly suitable for removing from a gas particles having a size less than one micron.
